How long does a new garage door installation take?

A residential garage door installation typically takes 3 to 5 hours from start to finish. A single-car door usually takes closer to 3 hours. A double-car door or a heavier commercial door takes 4 to 5 hours. The time depends on whether the old door is in the frame, how much of the old hardware has to stay or be replaced, and whether the tracks need adjustment or replacement. Here is what the technician does first: remove the old door, usually in two to four sections depending on the type. Then inspect the frame and tracks. If the tracks are bent or misaligned, they either get straightened or replaced. If they are in good shape, they get cleaned and reused. The new door then gets hung in the tracks, one section at a time, and the hinges and rollers are fastened. Once the door is in place, it gets balanced and the opener is fitted and tested.

The longest part of the job is usually getting the door perfectly balanced and square in the frame.
